Autumn Trial for Junior and Senior infants

in School Events | 0 comments

In October of this year Junior and Senior infants took part in their annual autumn trial around the school and local environment. They began by walking around the school environment, locating different types of trees, autumn leaves, berries, and animals as they went along. They then proceeded to the old road. Along here children collected leaves of various shapes and colours. They gathered some berries and nuts. They pointed out some parts of the old road e.g. old signs, old lines on the road and noticed what things have changed and what have stayed the same. They also came across a local farmer’s cattle crush and cattle pen and discussed the work of a farmer. Unfortunately the children also noticed some rubbish dumped along the old road and the children devised ways of looking after their local environment. The children were disappointed not to see any of the local leprechauns along the old road but they did spot their bed and some milk cartons they had left lying around the place. Ah well maybe next year!! Autumn Trial for Junior and Senior infants...

Visit of the rescue services

As part of our Oral language curriculum, the children were learning all about local rescue services. To support the children’s vocabulary development, the rescue services visited our school, a visit kindly organised by parent and paramedic Conor Devine. The children were first visited by two local paramedics, and they explained what their job entailed, how they treat injuries, some of the equipment they use and told stories of accidents they had attended to. Next the children were attended to by 2 people from the Civil Defence. The Civil Defence explained to the children how they attend events such as local sports days, hurling matches, family fun days and attends to minor accidents at these events. The highlight of the day was the children’s trip outside to the ambulance. The children were allowed sit in the front of the ambulance and here the loud siren. They then moved to the back of the ambulance where they seen all the different equipment used by the ambulance crew and used some of the equipment such as the stethoscope, thermometer, and blood pressure monitor. Each child took turns lying on the stretcher and some were tempted to go for a little snooze!!! Rescue Services...
