3RD December 2018 Dear Parents/Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. New Language Curriculum In-service: School will be closed this Friday 7th December to facilitate staff in-service on the New Language Curriculum. Christmas Carols: Parents are welcome to attend the school to watch the children perform Christmas carols and recite some poetry on Thursday 20th December. Children from Infants – 2nd class will be performing from 1:00pm to 1:30pm, then the children from 3rd – 6th will be on stage from ¬¬1:45pm to 2:30pm. Due to space restrictions in the school hall, we would ask that parents only attend the performance of the class that your child is in. Parish Bazaar: The Parents Council of Kilchreest N.S. are organising the Parish Bazaar on Sunday 16th December. This year the proceeds will be used to help with the required investment needed to purchase new Reading material. Raffle tickets will be distributed shortly and contributions to the annual cake sale will be sought by members of the Parents Association. We thank the Parents Association for their continued support of the school and we ask that all parents help in any way they can. Parent-teacher Meetings: There was a great attendance at this years’ Parent-Teacher meetings. The school appreciates the interest you take in your children’s education. Studies have proven that when parents and teachers are working together children will make good progress. We encourage you to keep in contact with your children’s teachers. Book Fair: The Book Fair was run in conjunction with the parent-teacher meetings. Over €1,200 was collected, 50% of which the school will use to help support reading initiatives. Thanks to Ms. Keely for organising the Book Fair. Thanks also to Joby and Assumpta for running the book fair throughout the week. Team Hope Shoebox Appeal: Once again there was a great response to the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. This is a very worthy cause and makes Christmas special for those children who receive the boxes. Thanks to Ms. Hayes for organising the distribution of the leaflets and arranging for the photo to appear in the Connacht Tribune. 12th October 2018 October Newsletter Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Maths Inspection: The school was visited by District Inspectors Sinead Ginnane and Christine Casserly recently. The looked at teaching and learning in Maths. They were happy with the overall standard and they made some suggestions for improvement. They will be drafting a report in the coming weeks and we will communicate the details of their findings once we receive the final report. I would like to complement our hard working staff and the children for their diligence throughout the inspection. Maths Week: Maths week is on from the 15th – 19th October. This is always an enjoyable week for the children where they get the chance to do Maths games, Maths trails, Puzzles and Problem-solving, and use the school’s technology for Maths. As children will not be getting Maths homework, we would ask that you give children the opportunity to use Maths in their environments eg. estimating shopping bills, using measures when cooking, cost of petrol/diesel per litre, identifying shapes and looking at numbers on road signs or in the homes. Mini-7’s Finals: Congratulations to the boys Mini-7’s hurling team who got through to the finals on Tuesday 16th October in Annaghdown. Their matches will start at 12 p.m. and they are playing Bullaun and Carrabane. We wish them the best of luck. All support would be greatly appreciated. Well done also to our girls’ camogie panel who lost out to eventual winners in their mini-7’s blitz. Thanks to Ms. Hayes for organising the blitz and coaching the girls. Congratulations: to Ms. Kelly on winning another all-Ireland Golf title with her club Portumna Golf Club recently. Clothes Collection: There was a great response to this year’s clothes collection, (511 kgs) and we would like to thank all parents who donated bags of clothes. Dear Parents & Guardians, Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a lovely summer. We look forward to the year ahead which we hope will be a safe, successful and enjoyable one. Special welcome to the Junior Infants and their parents to our school. We are confident that you will be made feel part of our school community very quickly and we urge you to become involved in school activities. We look forward to working with you during this school year. Staff: We welcome all staff members back to the school. We are delighted to have Ms. Hayes back following the birth of her daughter. We are also glad to announce that Mr. Corry has withdrawn his application for early retirement and will be remaining with us this year. Assumpta Hession joins our school staff as a Special Needs Assistant and we welcome Assumpta to our staff. Past Pupil, Rebecca Finnerty, will be with us for the next 10 weeks completing her final year’s teaching practice. Rebecca will be teaching 3rd and 4th class and Junior and Senior Infants in the coming weeks. We wish her well. Congratulations to past pupil, Aoife Brennan, on winning an all-Ireland u-16 title with Galway, Fintan Burke, for captaining Galway to the Leinster u21 title and David Burke for captaining Galway to the Leinster Senior title. We are very proud of all our past pupil’s achievements. Lenrec Clothing Collection: Our annual clothes collection is on Wednesday 26th September. This normally raises about €150 for school funds. The school receives €6 per 10kg bag of clothes and €2 for a mobile phone. We would appreciate any support you can give. County Photos: County photos are coming to the school on Friday 14th September to take the school photos. Please ensure your children have the correct uniform on. Staff Meeting: The children will be going home at 12.30 on Wednesday 19th September to facilitate a staff meeting. The buses will run as normal. Tin whistle: Lessons with Yvonne Barret will recommence for 1st – 6th class children next Tuesday 11th September. APRIL NEWSLETTER Dear Parents & Guardians, Welcome back after the Easter holidays. Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. School Athletics: The annual John Manning Inter-school athletics competition will take place on Wednesday 25th April. Temple Street Coffee Morning: Denise Lucia, Niamh Davison’s grandma is organising a cake sale in aid of the Ronald McDonald House Charity. Denise will be making various cakes that will be on sale on Friday 20th April in the school hall from 1:00 – 3:00pm. We would ask each child to bring €2.00 on the day. Parents are welcome to contribute by baking some cakes for sale or buying some of the treats for themselves. This is a very worthy cause and we would ask people to support it if you can. R.S.E.Talks: The Relationship Sexuality Education talk is taking place this year for 5th and 6th class children and parents on Tuesday 14th June from 7:15pm – 9:15pm in the school hall. The talk will be delivered by qualified professional, Therese Fennessy. School Matches: There will be a number of hurling and camogie matches coming up in the next few weeks. Our school policy is that we get buses for all matches. We ask for €2 per child to help with the cost of bus. Public Library Visit: We are having our annual visit from the school’s library service on Monday 23rd April. Once again I would like to thank the school S.N.A. Joby Madden for co-ordinating the exchange of the books this year. School Nurse Visit: The junior infant children will have their vision and hearing tested by the school nurse on Thursday 17th May. First Confession/First Communion: I would like to congratulate our 2nd class children on making their First Penance. Preparations are well under way for First Communion on Saturday 26th May. School Closures: Friday 4th May Annual leave. Monday 7th May – Bank Holiday Friday 25th May – Referendum Wednesday 30th May – Staff meeting. Children go home at 12:30pm. March 2018 NEWSLETTER Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. New Child Protection Guidelines: The school has recently drafted new Child Safeguarding and Risk Assessment statements in line with the new child protection guidelines. These have been in effect since March 11th. A copy of both of the above are available on our school’s website and are on display inside the main entrance to the school. All school personnel also completed the TUSLA on-line child protection training course. Tin Whistle Lessons: Tin whistle lessons will finish for this year before Easter. I would like to thank Yvonne for all her hard work with the children. Swimming Lessons: As we missed a swimming lesson due to the weather this will be made up on Tuesday 20th March. Our last lesson is on the following day Wednesday 21st March. Thanks to all the parents who helped to supervise. The children made great progress this year. Seachtain na nGaeilge: The school recently celebrated Seachtain na nGaeilge and we had a lovely ceolchoirm on the Thursday where the children sang Irish songs, recited Irish poetry, played traditional Irish music and performed Irish dancing. Our language and our culture are very important to us here in the school and it is great to see the children enthusiastic about both. First Penance: Congratulations to our 2nd class boys and girls on making their first penance on Tuesday 13th March. Thanks to Fr. Joe for the ceremony and particularly to Ms. Cusack for preparing the children so well. Thanks also to the choir who sang and played beautifully for the ceremony. Reminder – First Holy Communion is on 26th May. Clothes Collection: Thanks to all the parents who contributed to our recent clothes collection. Once again there was a great response. Teaching Practice Student: Well done to Shelley Finnerty on completing her teaching practice in the Infant room. Shelley is a past pupil of the school and it is always nice to be able to assist pupils in their future careers. Shelley will be a very welcome addition to the teaching profession. 14th February 2018 Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Kilchreest N.S. Table Quiz: This year’s quiz which we use as a school fundraiser was once again a great success. We had the biggest number of entrants and the quiz is going from strength to strength. I would like to thank all the parents and staff for helping on the night. A special word of thanks to Ms. Kelly for co-ordinating the event and the Meadow Court for providing their facilities. The quiz raised approximately €1,400. Credit Union Quiz Teams: Well done to our school quiz teams who participated in the Credit Union quiz in Loughrea. Congratulations to our u13 team of Josh McPhilbin, Aoife Sweeney, Róisín Doyle and Darragh Brady who finished third overall. Thanks to Ms. Keely for preparing the children and attending on the night. Clothes Collection: Our next school clothes collection is Wednesday next 21st February. Bags of clothes and old mobile phones can be dropped off at the school that morning. World Book Day: Is on Thursday 1st March. Children can dress up as a character from their favourite book on that day. Enrolments: We are now taking enrolments for September 2018. If you know anyone who might be interested in enrolling their child in the school, please ask them to contact the office on 091 840112. Congratulations and Thanks to David Burke on firstly being named Captain of the Galway Senior Hurling team for 2018 and on behalf of everyone associated with the school I would like to thank him for donating his All-Ireland final winning jersey to the school. David presented the jersey on Wednesday 14th February. We are very proud to have this special momento hanging up in the school. New Child Protection Guidelines: New child protection guidelines came into effect recently and all schools are to receive in-service to familiarise themselves with the new procedures. Schools are entitled to close for 2 half days and we will be closed for half days on the following dates – Friday 2nd and Friday 9th March. Buses will run as normal on these dates.
