14th December 2016 Dear Parents & Guardians, Christmas is upon us and there is great excitement in school as the holidays draw closer.  Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Christmas Carols:  Children will be singing carols, playing some music and reading some poetry on Thursday 22nd December starting at 11.00am.  The Junior classes will commence proceedings.         3rd – 6th will perform from 11.20am.  Parents are welcome to attend.  Children can wear Christmas jumpers and Santa hats on the day if they have them. Dates for your attention: Christmas Holidays Thursday 22nd December – children go home at 30pm School re-opening Monday 9th January 2017 Staff meeting Wednesday 18th January – children go home at 30pm. Buses will run as normal on all half days. School Quiz:  Our annual inter-schools fundraising table quiz will take place on Thursday 19th January 2017 at 7.30pm in the Meadow Court Hotel.  We will make contact in the New Year with further details. Parish Bazaar:  We would like to thank the Parents Council for organising a raffle and cake sale on Sunday 11th December. Swimming Lessons:  Lessons will commence in the new year for children from 3rd – 6th. We will make contact in January with the dates and costs for the lessons. Clár Grant Aid:  On behalf of the school community I would like to thank parent, Sinead Clancy, for helping to secure some funding through the Clár Government programme to improve the signage and traffic calming measures around the school.  We will find out in the new year how much we have been allocated.  The funding should help to make the roads in the environs of the school safer. Clothes Collection:  We will be having another school clothes collection on Wednesday 25th January 2017. School Policies:  There are two draft school policies – Data & Record Keeping and Arrival and Dismissal of Pupils up on the school website/available in the office, for your attention and input.  Please feel free to make any suggestions via e-mail at kilchreestns@eircom.net or by appointment with the Principal prior to their ratification at our next Board meeting. 28th November 2016 Dear Parents /Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Science Week: Thanks to all the teachers for organising activities in their classrooms this year.  We are also grateful to the Principal and Vice Principal of St Brigid’s Vocational School for allowing the Supermac’s Formula One Racing team to visit our school as part of Science Week. We were delighted to welcome this very talented group of students to the school.  We are particularly proud to hear about past pupils Adam Fahey and Eibhlin Lee’s achievements and were so impressed with Eibhlín and her presentation skills on the day.  Well done to everyone involved. Parent-teacher Meetings: As usual there was a great response to the meetings this year.  If any parent was unable to attend and would like a meeting, please make contact with the teacher and a suitable time will be arranged. Book Fair: The annual Book Fair was very successful again this year.  €900 was collected, 50% of which the school was able to spend on books to update our libraries.  Thanks to all the parents and children who supported the Book Fair and to Ms. Keely for organising it. A special word of thanks to our SNA, Joby, for all her hard work, particularly on the evening of the parent-teacher meetings. Author Visit: Renowned children’s author, John Quinn, paid a visit to the school as part of our Book Fair.  The children really enjoyed listening to John’s stories and hearing him talk about writing. Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal: There was a fantastic response to the Christmas Shoebox appeal this year. Thanks to everyone for contributing and helping this very worthy cause.  Thanks also to Ms. Hayes for organising the distribution of leaflets and to Ms. Kelly for their collection. Congratulations to past pupil David Burke on his second all-star award.  This is a fantastic achievement and richly deserved. Christmas Concerts: Due to constraints on time and curriculum overload, it has been decided that Christmas concerts will now take place every second year.  As we had concerts last year, there will be no concerts this year. 24th October 2016 Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. St. Thomas’ County Final Success: Congratulations to the victorious St. Thomas’ Senior Hurling team on their great win in the County final.  We were delighted to welcome the team and management to the school on Friday 21st October.  We wish them well as they go on to represent Galway in the All-Ireland series.   Maths Week: The children enjoyed a very successful week.  They got to experience different activities like maths trails, games, puzzles, projects and everyday maths.  Thanks to all the teachers for making the week so enjoyable for the children.  I would encourage you to use maths in everyday situations with your children.   Parent-Teacher Meetings: This year’s parent-teacher meetings are taking place on Tuesday 22nd November from 1-5pm. We will be in contact after the mid-term break to confirm times. Children will go home at 12.30pm and buses will run as normal.   Cyber-Bullying Talks:  There was a disappointing turn-out for the talk on Wednesday 5th October.  Thanks to Brendan Smith for coming on the night.  Those who were in attendance found it very informative and beneficial.   Mini 7’s Hurling:  Congratulations to the boys hurling team that reached the County finals on Friday 14th October. They came up against the eventual winners Mountbellew and gave a good account of themselves.   Hurling and Camogie Training: The boys and girls benefitted greatly from training after school on Thursday evenings for the last month.  Thanks to Ms. Hayes for giving her time. Shoe-Box Appeal: The leaflets for this years’ Christmas Shoebox Appeal are being sent out today.  The last day for returning the boxes is Wednesday 9th November.   School Book Fair: This years’ school book fair will take place on the week starting Monday 21st November.  Parents will be able to view the books on the day of the parent-teacher meetings on Tuesday 22nd.  As always a percentage of the money spent can be used by the school to purchase new books for the school library.   S.E.S.E. Trail: 3rd to 6th classes will be going on their termly S.E.S.E. trail on Thursday 27th October.  This term we are...
