January 2017 Newsletter   Dear Parents & Guardians, I would like to wish you and your families a very happy new year.  Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Christmas Carol Service:  I would like to congratulate the children for their performances of this year’s Christmas carol service.  I would also like to thank the teachers for preparing the children so well. Active Schools:  The school is looking to be recognised as an active school.  As part of this process we are trying to encourage the children to receive their recommended daily allowance of 60 mins exercise per day.  The following are some whole school approaches:  (i) Fit 4 5 in the mornings; (ii) Busy Break on Wednesdays and (iii) P.E homework.  We would welcome your support and ask that you encourage the children to do the exercise as part of homework. Swimming:  Please see attached details of this year’s swimming lessons for children from   3rd – 6th. Table Quiz: Our annual inter-schools fundraising Table Quiz will take place on Thursday 19th January 2017 at 7.15pm. in the Meadow Court Hotel.  The Quiz is open to children from 3rd – 6th class and tables of 4 cost €20.00.  We will also need some help from parents to correct and collect on the night.  If you are available to help, please let the class teacher know with a note in your child’s diary.  This is always a great evening for the children and a good fundraising event for the school.  We welcome your support and assistance. Clothes Collection: Our next school clothes collection is on Wednesday 25th January 2017. Reading World Cup: Our annual Reading World Cup is under way at the moment for children from 1st – 6th.  This is one of our initiatives to promote reading in the school. School Closures:  Staff Meeting Wednesday 18th January – children go home at 30pm. Buses will run as normal on all half days. School will also be closed for annual leave on: (i) Monday 20th March (ii) Friday 2nd June  Teachers in-service on Monday 29th May– Primary Language Curriculum Best Wishes to the St. Thomas’s team and management in the All-Ireland Club semi-final on Saturday 4th February....

  16th June 2016 Dear Parents & Guardians, We are approaching the end of another busy and successful school year.  The children have once again been a credit to you and are to be commended for their hard work and especially their behaviour.  We hope you all have a most enjoyable summer. Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Report Cards:  This year’s school report cards along with book lists and next year’s school calendar are going home today.  Please check your child’s bag for them.  If you want anything clarified in relation to the details enclosed please don’t hesitate to contact the school. Irish Water Safety Talk:  We had a visit from a member of Irish Water Safety Ireland last Monday 13th June.  The children learned some valuable life-saving lessons.  Please check our website for further details. School Tour: The children had a most enjoyable day on their school tour to the Let’s Go Activity Centre in N.U.I.G. Coole Park: The whole school will go on our annual trip to Coole Park for a picnic on Tuesday 21st June.  The bus will depart at 10.00am and will return at 2.00pm.  The Board of Management has agreed to pay for the transport.  Children will need a packed lunch and suncream will need to be applied in the morning before coming to school. Trail to Woodville House:  The children from 3rd to 6th class will go on their final S.E.S.E trail of the year to Woodville House on Thursday June 23rd. A bus will bring the children there and back.  We would ask that each child bring €2 to help cover the cost of bus.  We are delighted to have Gerry Daly accompany us on our trail again this time. New Infants:  We welcome our new infants and their parents to their first day of school on Friday 24th of June from 9.20am – 11.00am Match v Lackagh N.S.:  Boys from 2nd – 4th will travel to Lackagh N.S. on Friday 24th June to play a challenge match.  Children will need to bring €2 to help with the cost of the bus. Dear Parents and Guardians, Christmas is fast approaching and excitement is building among the children. We have had a very busy few weeks and below are a list of recent and upcoming events. Science Week: Thanks to all the teachers for organising activities in their classrooms this year. We are also grateful to St. Brigid’s Vocational School for allowing transition year students to visit the school and carry out science experiments with all the children. Thanks to Principal Sean Connolly for facilitating this and to teachers Ms. Annette Lamb and Mr. John Brehony for supervising the activities. Parent – Teacher Meetings: As usual there was a great response to the meetings this year. If any parent was unable to attend and would like a meeting, please make contact with the teacher and a suitable time will be arranged. Book Fair: The annual Book Fair was very successful again this year. €900 was collected, 50% of which the school was able to spend on books to update our libraries. Thanks to all the parents and children who supported the Book Fair and to Ms. Kelly for organising it. A special word of thanks to our school S.N.A. Joby, for all her hard work that week, particularly the evening of the parent-teacher meetings. Authors Visit: Renowned children’s author Eddie Lenihan paid a visit to the school as part of our Book Fair. The children really enjoyed his unique brand of storytelling. Thanks to Ms. Kelly for organising this. Christmas Concerts: A reminder that our Christmas concerts take place on Friday 18th December. Parents/Guardians and Grandparents are welcome to come and attend, see times below: Infants: 11.00am – 11.50am 1st & 2nd 12.00noon – 12.45pm 3rd & 4th 1.00pm – 1.30pm 5th & 6th 1:45pm – 2.20pm. Parish Bazaar/Parents Council Raffle: The Parish Bazaar takes place this Sunday from 12.30pm – 5.00pm. Our Parents Council have organised a raffle and tickets have been distributed to all families. On behalf of the school I would like to thank the Parents Council for organising this and ask you to support it. As per their letter we are hoping to use the funds to upgrade our overhead projectors. Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Parent-teacher Meetings: Please find overleaf the times and schedule for this year’s parent-teacher meetings. This year’s meetings will take place on Tuesday 24th November. The children will go home at 12.30pm and the busses will run as normal. Please contact the class teacher if the appointed time doesn’t suit and an alternative appointment will be arranged. Book Fair: Our annual Book Fair coincides with the parent-teacher meetings this year. Parents will have the opportunity to view and purchase books in the general purpose room on the evening. Ms. Smyth: We welcome Ms. Gráinne Smyth to our school staff until the beginning of June 2016. Christmas concerts: The date for this year’s Christmas concerts will be Friday 18th December. Parents are welcome to come and view the concerts. Infants: 11.10am – 11.50am 1st & 2nd 12.00noon – 12.45 pm 3rd & 4th 1.00pm – 1.45pm 5th & 6th 2.00pm – 2.45pm School visit by Rescue Services: We would like to thank Junior Infant parent Conor Devine for organising a visit of the Ambulance and Civil Defence to the school prior to mid-term. Maths Week: Thanks to all the class teachers for organising activities in their classes for Maths week this year. Sam Mitchell Tournament: Congratulations to the boys hurling team for winning the Sam Mitchell tournament this year. Thanks to Kilnadeema N.S. for organising the tournament. Best Wishes: We wish Ms. Hayes the very best of luck in the County Camogie final this weekend. Shoebox Appeal: This Friday 13th November is the final day for sending in the shoeboxes.
